President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to transform the reclaimed Agbogbloshie landfill site into an industrial hub.

The President said hub will include the establishment of a textile factory aimed at creating jobs for young people.

According to the President, the initiative forms part of the government’s broader strategy to reclaim and redevelop landfill sites across the country for productive economic activities.

President Mahama made the announcement on Friday, September 18, 2026, during the commissioning of the evacuation exercise at the Agbogbloshie landfill site under the National Emergency Waste Evacuation Exercise.

He said reclaimed landfill sites would be converted into spaces for industrial development and employment creation, with particular attention to opportunities for the youth.

The proposed textile factory is expected to form part of the redevelopment plans for the Agbogbloshie site, which the government intends to reposition as a centre for productive economic activity.

The evacuation of waste from the site to the Adepa Waste Centre at Nsawam is expected to continue for 90 days.

Approximately one million tonnes of waste are scheduled to be removed as part of the exercise.

The government says the broader landfill reclamation programme is intended to address environmental concerns while unlocking land for economic development and job creation.
